Temp Work Has Its Benefits

To temp or not to temp? Permanent employment isn’t the be-all-end-all, temp work has it benefits too. While the thought of not having a fixed position might seem daunting at first, you’ll soon see how temping might be the next best step for you to take.

1.   Flexibility

Whether you’re a new mum (or dad), still studying or saving for something special and looking for extra cash; taking on temp work could be the way forward. The beauty of temp work is that it fits around you. By working closely with your temp agency and keeping them in the loop with your availability, you’ll have complete and utter flexibility.

 

2.   To build experience

Build experience and boost your confidence. Temping provides a brilliant opportunity for you to broaden your skill set. While a frequent requirement when hiring for permanent positions is that candidates have previous experience, the criteria for temp work tends to be more flexible. This means that less focus lies on experience and more on team fit and transferable skills. Take our temporary concierge roles for example. Providing that you’re polite, presentable and able to demonstrate the ability to deliver 5-star customer service it’s likely that we’ll be able to place you, even without front of house experience.

Perhaps you’ve recently left school or graduated and can’t pinpoint what it is that you want to pursue. Or maybe it’s time for a change in your career. Temping allows you to test the waters, learn more about what you like (and what you don’t), identify your strengths and build on your weaknesses. It’s an opportunity to learn, boost your confidence and move forward with new insights in tow.

 

3.   Regular pay and holiday allowance

Know your rights. As a temp employee you are entitled to regular weekly (that’s right, weekly!) pay and holiday allowance.  The European Working Time Directive stipulates that all temporary workers must receive a minimum of 5.6 weeks paid leave per annum. When temping with Abbatt, your holiday pay accrues (at 12.07% of your gross pay) across all placements. Depending on your contract, you can also have this paid in advance.

 

4.   A foot in the door

It’s all about baby steps. Take on a temp position and get a foot in the door. At Abbatt many of our permanent positions are filled with temps who our clients are so impressed with that they don’t want them to leave! Temping offers you the chance to get known and to network and equally provides hiring companies the opportunity to see you in action. What’s more, with jobs usually advertised internally first, temping is a logical route into a new company.

 

5.   To stop question marks

You don’t want question marks over your ability because of gaps in employment. While the ultimate goal might be to secure a permanent position, it’s worth taking on temp work in the meantime. It shows that you’re a go-getter, it’s something more to add to your CV and experience that you can talk about when the right interview comes along. Ultimately, it makes you more employable.
